Korallreven – Sa Sa Samoa

Korallreven has sometimes been characterized as “ambient” music – which, if you only listened to the first ten seconds of their songs, you might think too. In reality, their sound is a carefully composed and constructed electronic-choral (now there’s a genre I’d like to hear more of) soundscape. It’s not without direction, either: the Swedish duo works in a percussive drive that doesn’t allow the music to feel aimless. Their latest release, “Sa Sa Samoa,” with Julianna Barwick, even works in a chant reminiscent of South African Isicathamiya, a la Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

These two flesh out the range of sound Korallreven puts out – “As Young As Yesterday” has more of a rolling momentum than “Sa Sa Samoa,” and their remix of “Till The World Ends” turns up the surreal.
