Diplo, Nero, Dillon Francis

Many music writers have described Skrillex’s multiple Grammy wins this past Sunday as evidence that electronic music producers have “come of age” and are now officially mainstream. Specifically, people are saying that our culture has begun to recognize and create a new level of celebrity for producers, who, after decades of working behind the scenes and not getting enough credit in the public eye, are finally getting their due and becoming stars in their own right. And Skrillex isn’t the only one – Diplo, who’s behind such acts as M.I.A. and Major Lazer (along with Switch, who’s also beginning to enter the spotlight), David Guetta, Avicii, and Nero are all rising on their own and becoming known for being more than “just” the DJs who make the music. Here are some recent releases that are making the rounds, sans conventional “star” to make it popular. (Although the Diplo track, “Climax,” does feature Usher’s falsetto, which admittedly is a big draw. But it’s being co-billed as a Diplo song, so we’ll treat this as evidence of the thesis.)
