This bizarre music video for Nicolas Jaar’s “Materials” just surfaced and is well worth a watch. It’s directed by Pondr, though it remains unclear as to if it is official or not. Regardless, both the song and the video are wonderfully engaging and mutually complementary. “Materials” starts off haphazardly, with hints of jazz, minimalist techno, metallic slashes. A pale little boy seems trapped in a series of unnerving hallucinations. Jaar systematically tweaks the disjointed elements into a smoothly whirring machine. The little boy escapes into nature… OR DOES HE?!
