I’m normally skeptical of album releases that consist entirely of remixes. I can’t help but feel that the artist is piggybacking on other musicians’ talent and success. Every now and then I’m proved wrong. Case in point: UK-based DJ Violet Green has put out an album of remixes and remasters – the creatively titled Remix EP – and it’s excellent. Some of the album consists of remixes of largely instrumental tracks by other DJs such as TOKiMONSTA and Kartell, and the rest is geared, shamelessly and gloriously, towards the dance floor. Those inclined toward K-Pop will be duly rewarded: about half the tracks on this album are takes on Korean supergroup Girls Generation, aka SNSD.
And… you know what? Not only are his remixes of Girls Generation songs the highlight of the EP, but he’s single-handedly stirred an appreciation for K-Pop in me. Is it deep? Will it move you profoundly. No. But that’s not really what we’re looking for in K-Pop, is it?
You can download the album in its entirety for free on his Bandcamp page. Here are my personal favorites:
