Kap Slap – Frequent Flyer

Kap Slap‘s tag line is “Mashups for raving.” It’s an appropriate designation, but it doesn’t really demonstrate the depth of his greatness as a dance-centric DJ. He’s unapologetic about the fact that his tracks are meant for dancing, preferably under the influence of a couple shots (or six or seven). He samples heavily from electronic music and pop tunes – and yes, thousands of other producers do this as well. But what sets Kap Slap apart is his uncanny ability to not only pick the most dance friendly, joy-filled parts of today’s pop, but also to fuse them together so that the new creation is decidedly better than the sum of its parts. These aren’t lazy mashups that simply put clips of several songs in the same key next to each other, in succession – these make you think about pop music in an entirely new way. I think it’s a damn shame we won’t hear any of these on the radio.
