In a time where psychedelic shoegaze rules the indie charts, it’s certainly refreshing to have ‘60s garage rock inspired Fletcher C. Johnson in the mix. The Brooklyn based gem’s latest “Lost My Head” is perfect rootbeer float music, making the most of the all too (personally) familiar theme of losing one’s mind. The intro’s doo woppy “bop bop bop” transports the listener to a happier time where catchiness and kitch are valued. Try to not tap your feet while simultaneously learning major life lessons: “A.) have fresh flowers around the house 2.) always bet on double jeopardy and C.) keep an open mind but not so open that your brain falls out.” If you’re feeling less rootbeer-floaty and more driving with the top down on a summer day, “Messin’ Up My Mind” is the Fletcher option for you. The audience is sucked in by another relatable theme, this time touching on feeling simultaneously hopeful and also messed up in a relationship. Classic guitar rifts paired with Fletcher’s grainy voice make for the perfect lazy day ride up the coast to find the perfect beach. Follow it up with s’mores around the campfire and you’ve got yourself a picture perfect day.
